The two smaller Elf tribes, the Vanyar and Noldor, were the first to reach the sea in the land of western Middle-Earth known as Beleriand. There, the Valar Ulmo Lord of the Waters uprooted an entire island and ferried the Elves on it across the ocean to Valinor. The island was anchored off the coast of Valinor and became known as Tol Eressëa (the Lonely Island). However, the large tribe of Teleri was slow to travel and was delayed further by their search for the lost Elwë. At long last, many Teleri gave up the search and went to the shores, were the ocean Maia Ossë taught them to love the sea and how to build and handle ships. Swans were sent to pull the vessels to Valinor and Tol Eressëa, where the latecoming Teleri dwelled near the sea.
